Three ways to ship your order abroad

The right shipping method depends on how much you buy, where it goes and what is inside. Your sales rep helps you pick the most practical and economical option.

Boxed orders ready for parcel shipping Small orders

Boxed lots by parcel

Box-size wholesale lots can be quoted at checkout on our website through UPS or USPS.

  • Best for testing a new product
  • No pallet or forwarder needed
Shrink-wrapped pallets ready for freight A few pallets

Pallets to your forwarder

Pick up at our warehouse or we quote LTL freight to your forwarder's warehouse in the USA. Your forwarder ships them abroad, often in a shared container (LCL).

  • Good for 1 to 10 pallets
  • Your forwarder quotes the ocean leg
Full shipping container loaded with pallets Best cost per unit

Full container (FCL)

The preferred option for buyers who export larger volumes. Fill it in one purchase or build it order by order.

  • Most 26-pallet truckloads fit in one container
  • Freight priced per container, not per pallet

Container sizes we load

Ocean freight is quoted by your forwarder based on destination and container size. The ranges below are typical market costs, not a quote from Discount Wholesalers Inc. Buying from Latin America? See our guide for buyers who export to their own country, also available in Spanish.

20'
Standard container

The entry point for export buyers testing a new market or a new category.

40'
High volume

The most common export format — the best balance of freight cost and volume.

45'
Maximum volume

Lowest cost per unit when you are moving a full truckload equivalent.

Container Length Width Height Volume Pallets (single layer) Pallets (double stacked*)
20' standard 19'4" 7'8" 7'10" ~1,170 cu ft ~10 ~20
40' standard 39'5" 7'8" 7'10" ~2,390 cu ft ~20 ~40
40' high cube Most used 39'5" 7'8" 8'10" ~2,690 cu ft ~20 ~40
45' high cube 44'5" 7'8" 8'10" ~3,040 cu ft ~22 ~44

Interior dimensions and capacity are approximate. *Double stacking works when each pallet is about 4 feet tall or less. Real capacity depends on pallet size, height, weight, the merchandise and how the container is loaded.

40-foot high cube shipping container loaded with pallets

How much fits in a container?

40' high cube · pallets up to 4 ft tall

  • Most of our 26-pallet truckloads can be consolidated into one container.
  • A 40' high cube container holds about 40 pallets, as long as each pallet is 4 feet tall or less.
  • Container listings are quoted on request — ask your sales rep for a container quote.

You do not have to fill the container in one purchase

Build your container order by order

A container does not have to be one big decision. Export buyers regularly place several orders over a few weeks — a few pallets of cosmetics when a load lands, a pallet of household goods the next week, apparel after that — and we hold the merchandise and ship it together on one container.

Week 1First pallets
Week 3New load arrives
Week 5Top up the mix
ShipOne container out

Why it works: ocean freight is priced per container, not per pallet, so every order you add before the container ships rides on the same freight cost. It also lets you buy each category when it is actually on the floor, instead of settling for whatever is available the day you want to ship.

Tell your sales rep from the first order that you are building a container. They will keep your merchandise together, tell you how much space you still have, and let you know when it makes sense to close the load.

New to importing? Start with a test shipment

Many export buyers start with a few pallets through their forwarder's shared-container (LCL) service, check how the merchandise sells in their market and what customs really costs, and then move up to a full container.

Pallet by pallet, or a full container?

Ocean freight runs roughly $400–$1,000 per pallet, while a full container runs $2,500–$6,000 regardless of how full it is. Pick your volume to see where the line crosses.

Freight cost comparison

Based on the freight ranges published on our Shipping & Delivery page.

Pallet by pallet
$2,000–$5,000
5 × $400–$1,000
vs
Full container
$2,500–$6,000
Flat, regardless of fill

At this volume the two are close. Pallet-by-pallet can win if your destination is on the low end of the range — worth quoting both.

Pallet by pallet
$4,000–$10,000
10 × $400–$1,000
vs
Full container
$2,500–$6,000
Flat, regardless of fill
Cheaper

The container is already ahead — and every pallet you add after this rides for free.

Pallet by pallet
$8,000–$20,000
20 × $400–$1,000
vs
Full container
$2,500–$6,000
Flat, regardless of fill
Far cheaper

At 20 pallets, shipping loose costs several times what the same volume costs in one container.

Pallet by pallet
$9,600–$26,000
24–26 × $400–$1,000
vs
Full container
$2,500–$6,000
Flat, regardless of fill
Best cost per unit

A full truckload is 24–26 pallets and up to 22,000+ units. This is the format that makes export margins work.

Freight estimates only. Discount Wholesalers Inc. is not a shipping provider or freight forwarder — your forwarder issues the actual quote.

Makeup and health & beauty

For makeup and health & beauty products we can only provide our invoice and packing list. We do not guarantee expiration dates and are not authorized by the brands to export.

Will it be allowed in your country?

Import rules change by country and by product. Some countries ban or restrict used clothing and footwear, and cosmetics, food or electronics may need permits or labels in your language. Send your customs broker the categories you want before you order, and ask how your country treats closeouts, shelf pulls and customer returns.

Insure your cargo

Once your load leaves our dock, the carrier's liability is usually limited. Ask your forwarder for cargo insurance covering the value of your purchase plus freight, before the container ships. Our commercial invoice shows the merchandise value.

U.S. export filing

U.S. exports valued over $2,500 per product type usually need an Electronic Export Information (EEI) filing before departure. When you hire your own forwarder, they normally file it with your authorization. Ask your forwarder what they need from us.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fill a container with several orders?
Yes, and many export buyers do exactly that. You can order over several weeks as new loads arrive; we keep your merchandise together and ship it on one container. Tell your sales rep from the first order so they can track how much space you have left.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. We export orders on a regular weekly basis. Larger volumes move by ocean freight container; smaller box-size orders can be quoted through UPS or USPS on our website.
Can you provide a manifest for customs?
Not always. Because of the type of liquidation merchandise we sell, we are not always able to provide a manifest or country-of-origin documentation. This has not caused problems for the orders we export weekly, but confirm your own country's requirements before buying.
Who pays customs duties and taxes?
The buyer. Our quotes never include customs clearance fees, duties, or taxes in the destination country. Contact your local customs office before placing an order to understand what you will owe.
Do you arrange the ocean freight?
No. Discount Wholesalers Inc. is not a shipping provider or freight forwarder. For larger international orders our sales team can help you connect with a freight forwarder who handles U.S. exports.
How many pallets fit in a truckload?
A full truckload is 24–26 pallets and can carry up to 22,000+ units. Truckloads start at $5,500.
What payment methods do you accept?
Domestic or international bank wire, Zelle, and cash at pickup. Our bank details are sent only with your sales order — never trust payment instructions that do not come with an official Discount Wholesalers Inc sales order.
How long do I have to pay?
Payment is due within 48 hours of receiving your sales order. Merchandise is released only after full payment.
Can you hold merchandise while I build a container?
Yes. We hold your merchandise with a deposit of 25% to 50%, and the balance is paid before loading. Tell your sales rep from the first order that you are building a container.
When will my order be ready for pickup?
Pallets and truckloads in our warehouse are normally ready 24 to 48 hours after payment. Truckloads shipped directly from a reclamation or distribution center need an appointment, normally 3 to 5 days after payment. Merchandise must be picked up within 5 days after payment.
Can you load my container by hand?
Yes. Floor-loading a container by hand takes 4 to 6 hours and must start before noon. An additional charge may apply depending on the work. Our loading hours are Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM.
What export documents do I receive?
A commercial invoice, packing list and Bill of Lading, plus the manifest when the load includes one. Your driver needs the pickup number from your sales order.
Can I export makeup and health & beauty products?
You can, but for these products we can only provide our invoice and packing list. We do not guarantee expiration dates and are not authorized by the brands to export. Check your country's import rules before you order.
How many pallets fit in a 40' container?
About 20 pallets in a single layer, or about 40 in a 40' high cube when each pallet is 4 feet tall or less. Most of our 26-pallet truckloads can be consolidated into one container.
Can I import used clothing or customer returns into my country?
It depends on your country. Some countries ban or restrict used clothing and footwear, and others require sanitary certificates. Ask your customs broker how your country classifies the specific load before you order.
Do your loads include labels in Spanish or health permits?
No. Labels and permits required in your country are the importer's responsibility. Your customs broker can tell you if any product needs relabeling or a permit.
Who files the U.S. export declaration (EEI)?
Usually your forwarder, with your authorization, when the shipment is valued over $2,500 per product type. We provide the commercial invoice and packing list they need.
Should I insure my container?
Yes. Carrier liability is usually limited, so ask your forwarder for cargo insurance before the container ships.
How long does ocean freight take to Latin America?
It depends on the destination port, the route and the sailing schedule. Your forwarder confirms the current transit time for your destination.
Do you have a Spanish-speaking sales team?
Yes. Our sales team is bilingual in English and Spanish. See our guide for export buyers, which is also available in Spanish.
